Govind Ballab Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUAT) was established in 1960 as the first agricultural university in India. At the time of its inception, the university was officially known as UP Agricultural University under the ‘UP Act XI - V of 1958’. However, the amendment of the Act under the UP Universities Re-enactment and Amendment Act of 1972 led to the university being renamed to its current name, i.e. Govind Ballab Pant University of Agriculture and Technology. The university was renamed to honour the contributions of the then Chief Minister of UP, Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant. The university’s inception highlights the educational collaborations between India and the US, thus paving the way for the creation of 31 agricultural universities across India.
GBPUAT, Pantnagar, is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under the UGC Act of 1956. The University is also accredited by the National Agricultural Education Accreditation Board (NAEAB) with an ‘A’ grade. The campus administers 763 teachers and officers, 59 technical staff, 631 administrative and ministerial personnel and 1425 class III employees, encompassing a total of 2878 teaching and non-teaching staff. Additionally, the number of students at the university ranges from 4200 - 4400, resulting in a teacher-to-student ratio of 1:6.
The GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology main campus is located in the Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand. The vast area of the campus is well-maintained with well-tended fields, a network of roads, housing colonies, street lighting, telephone communication, and a water supply connection. The campus is also equipped with hospitals, marketing centres, 6 primary schools, and 3 secondary schools. The university is responsible for covering the regions of Terai, Bhabar and other hill areas. Along with this, the university offers its services through university-specific stations at other hill regions including Ranichauri (Tehri district), Majehra (Nainital district and Lohaghat-Sui (Champawat district).
