Established in 2010 by the Azim Premji Foundation, Azim Premji University, Bangalore, is a not-for-profit institution with a clear social purpose. The university aims to contribute to the realisation of a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society through Education and Research. Initially offering programs in Education and Development, the university has since expanded its academic offerings by including various undergraduate and postgraduate programs across many disciplines. 


The university’s campus, located on Sarjapur-Attibele Road, spans 90 acres and is structured to provide a serene and inclusive environment conducive to learning. It focuses on foundational learning, research and field engagement, especially in areas concerning development, sustainability and social justice. Azim Premji University, Bangalore, provides a vibrant and fun environment that encourages students to engage in cultural activities. The university hosts the following activities as part of its cultural initiative:


  • Campus Week - Every August, the University kicks off the academic year with ‘Campus Week’, an introductory event where student clubs and committees like the Community Engagement Cell and Placement Cell host seminars, games, screenings, and gatherings to showcase the vibrant campus life to freshers.


  • Unmukt - Unmukt is the university’s flagship three-day annual fest. In 2024, the theme ‘Retro to Right Now’ brought a lively mix of events such as linguistics workshops, Chinese whisper, retro-modern ramp walks, best-out-of-waste sessions, and various student and faculty-led community activities. Unmukt featured a soulful Sufi set by Shabnam Virmani, a high-energy DJ night by Rakesh Joshi, and band performances by Lohar the Blacksmiths, giving students a welcome pause from academics and a moment to unwind together.


  • The Festival of Onam - Onam is one of the most vibrant celebrations on campus, filled with traditional games like tug of war, cultural dances, and music performances. The festive spirit is complemented by Onam-specific sweets and stalls offering food, handmade jewellery, and crafts. Additionally, a stunning rangoli at the entrance of the Residences becomes the perfect photo spot, where students capture memories in traditional attire alongside friends and classmates.


  • Time for Halloween - In late October, the campus comes alive with spooky costumes and eerie vibes for the annual Halloween party. During the event, students are offered the opportunity to showcase their theatrical side, dance to haunting beats, and end the night with ghost stories.

The University supports student-led clubs that organise diverse activities aimed at building key skills and fostering community:


1. Philosophy Club: The Philosophy Club at Azim Premji University, Bangalore, explores unconventional questions through discussions and thought experiments. The members of the club conduct sessions to cover topics like AI consciousness and the ethics of immortality, offering a space for reflective, open-ended inquiry.


2. Physics Club: The Physics Club organises regular talks, workshops, and seminars ranging from observational activities like stargazing to skill-based sessions involving tools like Python. It serves as a space for students to explore topics in physics beyond the classroom.


3. Debate Club: The Debate Club hosts various activities, from formal parliamentary formats to casual discussions. The panel is open to all, regardless of experience. These activities are organised by the club in bi-weekly sessions. One of the recent events was the  ‘Resolution Rally 24’, where several colleges across Bangalore participated. The club also takes part in MUNs and external competitions to keep debate culture active in and around the campus.


4. Celluloid Film Club: The Celluloid Film Club hosts weekly screenings to promote discussions through cinema. Its recent event, Cinefest, featured a week-long lineup of films, alongside occasional movie marathons open to all.


5. Savitri Ambedkar Cultural Club: The Savitri Ambedkar Club holds discussions, reading circles, and screenings, all focused on anti-caste movements and social justice. It provides a platform for open dialogue and reflection on issues related to society and equality. 


6. Math Club: The Math Club at Azim Premji University, Bangalore, organises talks, game nights, movie screenings, workshops, and panel discussions. It also publishes ‘Mathappu’, a student-led undergraduate magazine that explores and showcases mathematical ideas through articles, podcasts, comics and more. 


7. Sustainable Farming Club: The Sustainable Farming Club at Azim Premji University, Bangalore, organises events to promote sustainable agricultural practices and environmental awareness.  One of its activities is the annual Sowing Day, during which students engage in hands-on activities related to farming. The club also publishes ‘The Future’, a newsletter that encourages reflection on eco-friendly food practices and their broader implications.
