Rani Channamma University, Belagavi, is a prominent public university in Karnataka established with the vision of expanding access to quality higher education in the northern districts of the state. The university was created by the Government of Karnataka in 2010, upgrading the former Kittur Rani Channamma Post Graduate Centre of Karnataka University, Dharwad, which had been operating since 1982 as a dedicated centre for postgraduate studies and research. With its transformation into an independent university, Rani Channamma University (RCU) has emerged as a significant academic hub, supporting regional educational progress and social empowerment.
The university is named in honour of Rani Channamma of Kittur, a legendary freedom fighter who led one of India’s earliest battles against British rule. Reflecting her spirit of courage and social transformation, the institution focuses on building an academically strong and socially responsible student community. The university promotes inclusive access to higher education, especially benefiting rural and economically disadvantaged students from surrounding districts.
Located at the scenic hillock campus “Vidyasangama” in Bhutaramanahatti, around 18 km from Belagavi city, RCU is spread across approximately 178 acres of green and pollution-free environment that supports both academic learning and research growth. The university has jurisdiction over the districts of Belagavi, Vijayapura, and Bagalkot, and supports a large network of 389 affiliated colleges, including autonomous and constituent institutions.
Beginning as a Postgraduate and research centre, the institution gradually developed a strong academic foundation across multiple disciplines and became known for its contribution to postgraduate education and research output. Today, the university hosts 21 postgraduate departments across 9 schools, offering a wide range of PG programmes, Ph.D. opportunities and research initiatives. RCU currently caters to thousands of postgraduate students and research scholars and has awarded numerous doctoral degrees in various disciplines.
In alignment with its mission of academic excellence and community development, the university has established Postgraduate Centres in Vijayapura, Bagalkot and Jamkhandi to expand learning access across North Karnataka. These centres play a crucial role in academic outreach, research activities, student skill development, and regional growth. Rani Channamma University operates with the objective of delivering high-quality education that combines academic rigor with values, professionalism and leadership development. It supports continuous learning through national and international collaborations, research projects, workshops, seminars, conferences, and interdisciplinary initiatives. Seat allocation varies for each course and affiliated college and typically includes general merit seats, reserved category seats (as per Government of Karnataka norms for SC, ST, OBC, Category-1, and special categories), as well as seats under the Management quota. Some departments and professional programmes also allocate NRI / Sponsored / Institutional quota seats, depending on course demand and regulations. The intake capacity differs across PG and PGD programmes, and detailed seat distribution is released annually through the university’s admission notification and individual college seat matrix.
