About St. Joseph’s University:


St. Joseph’s University, Bangalore is a Jesuit University founded in 1882 by the Paris Foreign Fathers. It would eventually be handed over to the Jesuit Society in 1937. The university started as a college established for the catholic community in India. The college was eventually split between the Indian and European sections in 1904. 

Before becoming a University, St. Joseph’s College was affiliated with Madras University till 1949, and later with Bangalore and Mysore Universities in 1967.  In Karnataka, SJC became the first affiliated college to have PG programmes in 1986. It opened a research centre in 1988 and was among the five colleges in the state to earn academic autonomy in 2005. 


The St. Joseph’s University Bill was passed in 2021, earning its title as University in July 2022. It was inaugurated as India’s first Public-Private-Partnership University by President Smt. Draupadi Murmu in September 2022.  

The university is committed to excellence, with the motto being “Fide et Labore”. In Latin, it translates to “Faith and Toil”, reflecting the university’s philosophy of striving for excellence in any field partaken in. SJU Bangalore prides itself on its high-ranking alumni and accomplished faculty, making the university a beacon of excellence.

There is the department of physical education with a director, a sports assistant, and two other members. The university actively encourages sports for its role in student development. St. Joseph’s University encourages its students to be part of the National Cadet Corps (NCC). With its motto “Unity and Discipline”, it aims to imbibe leadership qualities in students.
