Loyola College Chennai

The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) established Loyola College, a Catholic Minority Institution, in 1925 with the goal of offering higher education in an academic-oriented atmosphere for deserving students, regardless of caste or creed. At the time of its inception, the college offered an undergraduate programme in the humanities stream that included mathematics, history, and economics as its core subjects and accommodated 75 students in total. 

Although the college began its journey by being associated with the University of Madras, it attained the ‘Autonomous’ status in July 1978. By attaining this status, the college was empowered with the provision of framing its own curriculum and implementing innovative teaching methods and evaluation strategies. 

Currently, Loyola College, Chennai, offers 22 undergraduate courses, 21 postgraduate courses across various streams, 11 M.Phil programmes and 12 doctorate programmes. The college offers the above courses to 12,107 students with the assistance of 286 teaching staff members out of which 117 hold doctoral degrees, along with 182 non-teaching staff. 

Loyola College, Chennai, is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). It was conferred the status of ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ in 2004 and was confirmed the same in 2010. Additionally, the college was also accredited with an ‘A++’ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2021.
